Where Do They Live?
Roundworms live in water such as deep sea trenches and fresh water. Some live inside many different plants. They also live in the soil which is their main habitat. Worms are always moving throughout different habitats. They can also be found in humans or animals.
How are Thye Important to Humans and the Environment?
Importance to humans is that they spread diseases. The roundworms play a very important part in our soil. They recycle nutrients, minerals, and other substances in the soil. They put out a rich soil and assist healthy plant growth. When a roundworm dies their bodies decompose and nutrients fall.
How are These Animals Unique?
Roundworms are unique since they have no bones, eyes or segments. They can live in extreme conditions due to their extremely thick body covering. These places include hot springs and in vinegar. They usually live inside other species, who act as "host" to the worms.
How Do they Support Their Shape?
Because Roundworms do not have any bones they don't have a skeleton. Instead they have longitudinal and circular muscles to keep their shape. These muscles allow them to move and hold their body shape. These muscles are durable and can contract and relax.
How do They Breathe?
Roundworms breathe differently than humans. They breathe through their skin instead of using lungs. Then it diffuses into their cells into the bloodstream. Finally it diffuses back out their skin as carbon dioxide. This type of oxygen intake does not use any lungs.
How Do They Reproduce?
Male and Female roundworms mate. The sperm fertilizes the egg. The female then lays the eggs. The eggs hatch and the larva begin the rest of their life cycle. The roundworm reproductive cycle is different from humans since roundworms lay eggs.
What is Their Nervous System Like?
The nervous system is also contains the sensory system. Two large nerves make the worm's brain. The brain branches off into different sections of the body. As a part of the sensory system worms have eye spots. Worms, using their eye spots move away from bright light.
What type of Circulatory System do They Have?
The worm's circulatory system is what moves the blood around. All worms have a unique circulatory system; they have an open circulatory system. An open circulatory system means that they don't have blood vessels, blood cells, or a heart. Worms move their blood by always moving their bodies. This causes them to have constantly moving muscles.
What is their Excretory System Like?
Because a worm is a simple tube its excretory, or waste, system is also extremely simple. It is basically an in one end out the other. One end of the worm is the mouth and the other is the rear end. Worms do not use this system to dispose of their liquid waste. Worms urinate through their skin.
How Do These Animals Digest Thier Food?
The worm's digestive system is simple. There is a mouth at one end and a rear end at the other. Worms are special in one case though. They were the first animals to develop a tube-like digestive system. This means that they have a beginning of a stomach.

Wucheria is a roundworm that is spread by mosquitoes. These worms block fluid tubes in the human body especially in the legs.
What are some of the Diseases they Cause?
Roundworms cause many diseases in humans. These diseases can be received through skin contact, or by mouth contact. One skin contact disease is Ankylostomiasis. This disease is caused by hookworms. The disease occurs when a host has large amounts of hookworms which cause large amounts of iron loss. Visceral Larva Migrans can occur when you swallow "wandering worms." These worms travel from organ to organ. When they lodge themselves in the host's eye they cause this disease. The worms can cause permanent eye damage or blindness.
What is Their Agricultural Importance?
Roundworms are very important to agriculture. Worms that infest plants can damage crops, causing fewer crops to be harvested. Worms that use livestock as hosts also create problem. Animals can contract diseases because of the worms and may die. Farmers have to pay close attention to their crops and livestock to prevent and cure roundworm problems.
